WRITTEN ESSAYS

In addition to my filmmaking practices, I produce written analysis and arguments on topics and issues that the industry is currently subject to.

MEDIA COURSEWORK

It was part of the brief to create music video to a love song by a fictional artist signed Universal Music Group. The audience demographic was 16 to 24 year olds. I decided to tell the story of a relationship that is struggling under the magnifying glass of the media and fame.

ENGLISH COURSEWORK

For my English coursework, I could explore any aspect of Language and Identity. I decided to highlight the sexism within the film industry as it is a topic I feel strongly about and have opinions on. I have only just begun the study, but the statistics I am creating are astonishing and I am really excited to continue this project.

I chose to investigate the difference in the construction of Harley Quinn’s identity when written by a male and a female screenwriter. One would predict that the male construction of a female identity would be more stereotypical and therefore sexist whereas the female screenwriter would write from experience and probably have a more feminist intent. Suicide Squad (2016) was the first film to feature the DC character Harley Quinn, written and constructed for the screen by David Ayer. Birds Of Prey (2020) began to be written in 2015, during the filming of Suicide Squad, as a spin off in attempt to present Harley Quinn’s identity in a less sexist way. In 2015, female writer statistics were on the decline, with women accounting for 11% of all screenwriters, so male constructed female identities dominated the film industry. I chose to do this investigation during the drastic shifting of gender equality in the film industry, as it should highlight the importance of women creating content to fight sexist depictions within the media.

I'm only a couple months into university but I'm already working on some really great projects that address important issues like climate change, social issues surrounding our National Health service and the exploration of gender and sexuality in other countries that are still unaccepting of LGBTQ+ communities. I am excited to see where these lead me as we are still in the developmental stages of all.
